Hi--I need recommendations for in the door speakers for my 87 745Ti. I'm looking at upgrading all four. Local car audio place says the Eclipse SE9353 5.25in would be the first choice, and fit properly in the narrow Volvo door. I would like to use the original grilles if possible.
Anyone have any ideas or recommendations?
Also,I'm contemplating an amplifier for the system, and need suggestions about where to best locate the amp.

    How much amp and how many channels? estimated overall size? Depending on size and necessary airflow, you might be able to get it under the dash like the factory amps, or under a front seat, or into one of the otherwise unoccuppied wells in the trunk. For example, in my S70, the front amp is a volvo stock 3533004, 4 x 20, and fits below the glove box out of sight; the rear amp is a volvo 4 x 40 from a 960, in the left rear well under the trunk liner.

    Re the speakers--if you don't find something that fits exactly due only to the size of the openings in the sheet metal, consider the Sawzall approach. Radial cuts in the metal from the existing hole, and a ballpeen hammer to bend the metal out of the way to clear room for the magnets.

    Yes, ditto on Crutchfield. Their site will tell you exactly what fits, but only with the products listed in their catalog... for instance they only stock two 5 1/4 speakers to fit the 740 front doors.

    THe biggest problem for the volvos is the mounting depth in the doors which is pretty shallow. FUrthermore, even if you get the mounting depth right, some speakers have tweeters that protude quite a distance from the top and may negate the use of the factory grills.

    I checked and couldn't find any specs on the eclipse speakers you mentioned. Are they closeouts at that particular shop?

    Keep in mind that stereo installation is a completely DIY job.... especially when you go through a place like crutchfield who supplys the wiring harness, complete instructions, mounting kit, etc. I have been using them since 1996. In fact, I've taken a head unit and put it in 5 different cars by simply ordering the wiring harness adapter and mounting kit from crutchfield.

    As for additinal amplifiers, I don't have any experience. If you have a sedan, I would probably go for the flat area in the trunk... near the rear seat... or mount it on the rear seat back itself. Ditto for subwoofer placement... Maybe you could fit a sub in one of the wheelwells.

      My research so far gives these speakers high marks. The stereo place here sells them for $99/pr, but I've seen them online for $63! I even have an email inquiry into a guy who's selling them for only $50!
      They're only 1 7/8 inch thick--which will fit fine. Crutchfeld doesn't sell this brand.

      The amp location issue is difficult in the wagon--I don't want it in plain sight, but under the back floor seems like asking for trouble in cooling the unit.
