spark control 140-160

I got spark working with megasquirt. I did a brief writeup with pictures if anyone is interested.

    Steve -

Thanks for posting this! Very cool that you're trying this kind of stuff. Cooler still of you to share what you learn/accomplish!

    Best,

Thanks. I'm definately interested. Will get myself a second distributor to play with and modify while keeping my car running. I'm going for fabricating a photo interrupter, so do not have the problem of the cap and rotor out of sync. Might even go further and go for something similar to coil-on-plug setup. Or waisted spark.

I'm also playing with the idea of half of the time running on a spark of opposite polarity. So if you look at only 1 cylinder, you first get a positive spark and then a negative spark. My theory is that this should reduce buildup somewhat, becuase every time the current flows in an opposite direction. Only a thought, and I have not spent much time on it, but it kind of sounds like the theory might work sort of exactly precisely opposite running out of word...

Yes, there are a handful of electronics guys on this forum and please keep the updates coming! My car is running 2 Strombergs, but I've got an FI head for building an MS controller. Just realised from a recent post that I'll also need an extractor (is that the thing that I would call exhaust manifold?). My carb manifold is joined to the exhaust manifold, and I'm not going to cut it...

    Have fun...

There is another path you can take to do direct ignition/wasted spark with megasquirt. You can use the bits from a Ford EDIS ignition (found at the pick 'n pull on early 90's escorts and others) in conjunction with a megasquirt unit. It even has built in multispark. This way you can get the high resolution of a crank trigger and the coolness of wasted spark. The default EDIS system even comes with 8.5mm shielded wires, stock. The distributor is then relegated to holding the drive gear in position.

The difficult part is mounting the trigger wheel and sensor. A guy named Jeff Till already has this setup running on a B20. My fabrication skills are limited to hacksaws and JB Weld so that is delaying me. JParker said he would take a look at the problem for me (if I can remember to mail him the parts).

Thanks Steve. I've got access to all the CNC and other industrial toys I can dream of, but being an electronic engineer I don't like getting my hands dirty... Don't want to take apart my everyday driver and not know how to put it back together again! Was thinking it's easier to make a wheel for the distributor and design all the electronics as a hobby project. EDIS is great for higher rev engines where accuracy is important, but mine is (and will stay) an automatic in a country where the speed limit is 100km/h, where proposals are on the table for lowering it to 90km/h, they might enforce by law that electronic governers get installed, and they might start prosecuting manufacturers for selling cars that are able to break the speed limit! Of cause these are just proposals, but to think that is was actually suggested! Any way, our company is one of the largest international designers and manufacturers of electric fence energizers, so an ignition should be simple. (For you farmers, our brand names are Stafix, Speedrite and PEL, and a few months ago we launched a very nice energizer in the States called Patriot). Have fun...
