3rd alternator in 8 months 700 1990

Hi, I'm in process of replacing a 3rd alternator in 8 months. They are being replaced with some aftermarket part from my mechanic's source. My mechanic's supplier is making good with replacement but said this would be the last one. We intend to replace the battery with the alternator this time hoping this will resolve the problem. Is changing the battery going to help? Are we missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks........................ Tom

I assume that you have a charging problem. Check the condition of the battery cables, which can corrode. See the FAQ article on the exciter wire from the alternator to the instrument panel: if this circuit fails, your alternator will only sporadically charge and only above 2000 rpms.

Thanks for the help. I can tell something wrong when the horn sounds week then within the next week or two all the idiot lights start showing up faintly and gradually it gets worse and worse until the system fails. The battery is around 4 years old and the cables show no sign of corrosion. Does this sound like the exciter wire?

      Thanks again................. Tom
