Where theres smoke there's fire 200

My 89 wouldn't start, low battery. When I jumped it, wretched smoke from around the alternator appeared. Smell of burning plastic.

HELP!

I'm not sure, but if the cables were connected backwards, you may have cooked the alternator diodes.

I don't think that I did that, but...it was pretty early.

If I cooked the diodes, do I put a new alternator?

I'm afraid so. And maybe a battery, based on your voltage readings above.

To determine whether the battery is bad, or something external is dragging it down, you first need to get it charged up again. Then disconnect the ground cable and leave it overnight. If it's low in the morning, it's bad.

If it holds the charge overnight, then you may have wiring problems as Don suggests below.

Check the wiring harness that runs behind the lower pully under the front of the engine. Often the clamps will chafe the wires and they will short.
