A few M40 transmission questions 200 1975

Hello all,

I am trying to determine if I should get a locally available, year-unknown, M40 for back-up internal-gears for my 1975 M41.

- What year did the M40 appear first with the linkage-tunnel/short-shifter?

- Is it's linkage-tunnel/short-shifter an indication that this M40's gears would be compatible with my 1975 M41?

- Finally, is there a resource for M40 serial-numbers? This local M40's numbers, on the right-side of it's casing, are 380100 L5M K4. My 1975 M41's numbers are 380100 I15N K4.

As usual, thanks in advance to all the helpful people on this board.

If there is a valid serial number it will be on the brass ID plate at the
bottom of the rear mount next to the M40 designation. Casting numbers
are generally casting part numbers and date of production.

The 140s had the long shifter up till about 1971. P1800s had them at the
very beginning, so the short shifter doesn't guarantee anything. And we know
that there are internal differences. You might be able to find close
serial numbers and fairly well conclude that the trannies are the same,
or if you know that they were original in a same-year car.

Thanks, George.

I'll go back to check on that M40's real serial-number, then, and compare.

I found the transmission in the trunk of a Volkswagen and the yard-owner had no idea what car the M40 was from.

Thanks again.

addendum: The '71 142E had the short shift trans, but I believe that was an M41. The '71 14xS still had the long shifter.

Maybe that M40 is no older than 1972, then, unless it's cover was swapped. It's gears looked perfect and it shifted smoothly.

It had a Borg&Beck-type release-bearing, if that is any hint to the transmission's vintage.

Thanks.
