Strange Electrical Problem?? 200 1979

I have a 1979 264 and it has developed a strange electrical problem I can't figure out. Recently while driving at night my dash lights went out and at the same time the tail light out indicator came on. The next day I checked everything out and everything seemed OK. All marker lights were working and the dash indicator was not lit. However, at night this same thing occurs. It is only when the headlights are on. When the headlights are on the right rear tail light goes off, the dash lights go off and the marker light out indicator lights up.

Anyone have any idea where to start on this one? I'm baffled.

Thanks,

Sully

    Strange Electrical Problem?? 200 1979

My money is on a ground wire that has rusted out of it's connection to the body somewhere... maybe the ground for the headlights??...

another possibility might be the small wire going to the alternator has worn off some insulation and grounded to the alternator housing... this can cause strange electrical symptoms...

I don't have my electrical manual with me (it's for an '86 anyway) but someone might be able to tell you where the potential problem grounds are.
