Tranny shifting rather quickly S90-V90

As soon as I take off it seems that the tranny shifts straight out of first to second unless I stay into it pretty good. SAy 10 or 20 feet and into second with out much build up of speed. Question is there somethig some where that I can change to make the tranny stay in the lower gears a little longer before shifting. Does the about same thing in the sport mode as well.
Thanks with the help with the knock sensor question will be getting to that
this weekend and a new breather box as well.

The upshifts from 1-2 occur rather quickly on our 95 and 98 as well unless you put your foot into it. S mode doesn't seem to affect the 1-2 shift just as you describe. I think it's a fuel economy thing. Get the car moving in 1st and shift into 2nd asap since there's plenty of torque with these engines.

If you still feel something is wrong, you may want to 'home' flush the tranny. How long has it been?

Not so much as I feel anything is really wrong,I've had the car for queit a long time now. Bought a New BMW last year but still enjoy the 960 queit a lot.
I flushed the tranny and switched to mobile 1 syntheytic not long ago and really like the smoothness of what that did for it but as I said the shift points allways seemed a little to quick. I guess that was the third time changing out the tranny fluid.
While I got you though, the air conditioning really seems to cut back on the power of the engine when it's switched on Does yours do this as well? I put in a new compressor and condensor last year, new compressor twice, before the Volvo dealership found a good one.
Thanks again on the info and hope I may return the favor

"the air conditioning really seems to cut back on the power of the engine when it's switched on Does yours do this as well?"

Yes, both our 98 and our 95 feel the pain of the A/C compressor drag. We feel it even more here where I live at an elevation of 7,200 ft. The engine is making about 22% less power at this altitude than at sea level so the compressor drag is even more noticeable. For some reason our 95 feels even less powerful than our 98 when the compressor clutch kicks in. I have checked the pressures in both systems and they are normal and exactly the same so I don't think it's the compressors. I have considered disconnecting the battery for 30 mins or so and reseting the ECM and seeing if that makes any difference.

I'm going to take the alternater out, starting today, am replacing the last knock sensor and replacing the breather box while I've got all that out of the way. The ECM that your talking of, what is that and how do you reset it. I could do this and get back to you on how it worked out. Will have the battery discontected for quiet sometime with all I'm going to be working on.

Disconnecting the battery will essentially clear the Engine Control Module ECM and the Transmission Control Module TCM of adaptive memory. When you reconnect the battery they will 're-learn' your driving habits and store various parameters.

Let me know if you notice any difference in your 1-2 shift.

Dew, all I can say is what a gooorilla, Got the power steering and alternator
out, all the brakets and breather box. Have installed the knock sensor I couldn't find, it was by the box behind the hose that goes to the side of the box. I couldn't have replaced it with out removing all the stuff mentioned above. Will start back in the morning to do the install on the box itself and all the accesiories. will let you know about the shift pattern if it changes or not. Getting the box back in and then installing the hoses back on it will be the real bugger but it will be doable. I really miss my 427 ford galaxie
I had all sorts of room to work under the hood of that thing, I guess it was good training for me.

Got her finished off now and have taken 2 test drives about 30 miles in all.
I have to say I'm quiet pleased with the performance from what she was doing a few weeks ago. Was quiet a bear also hooking the breather box hoses back up and getting everything back together, awfull tight in there.
The tranny still shifts out of first quickly as before but there is power in all the gears and really gets pretty strong from 4000 on up. After replacing the last knock sensor she's pulling just a hair over 20lbs. of vacume now.
The flame trap is not completelly dry but is much better than before.
Have you ever tried auto rx? They have a web site www.autorx.com and it's not just snake oil the stuff really does a good job of cleaning out the oiling system in these cars. Thanks for the info and hope I may have helped with ideas yor way also
