I noticed that you drive an 80 245DL with the SU carb on it. How does it run?

I had an 81 245DL with a badly adjusted SU carb that had deteriorated fuel lines and was missing the hot air intake...so needless to say it ran like crap. The undercarriage was rusted out too.

all ot these factors, as well as a lack of funds to repair the car while I was a first year student, and the lack of mechanics who were willing on helping me out...all contributed to my getting rid of the old gal.

Ever since then I had sworn off Volvo's as I had purchased a VW, and 2 BMW's. Overall, now that I know so much about the e30 series of BMW, I think I can easily handle doing repairs on a 240 VOlvo, or even a 700 series too.

take care,
Stanley

It runs fine, but admittedly the carb has to be adjusted properly. The advantage of the SU is that it is easily adjustable. Maybe too much so for the emission guys.

It gets good mileage (about 10-11kms per liter mixed driving) which seems to be better than most modern cars with their high tech engines and accompaying problems. You know how open the engine compartment is.

I've had the same problems, but the wagon is too practical to give up without a fight. (Notice how wagons are back on the market again?)

Fuel line was easy to replace with 5/16" copper. Not concerned with pressures as system isn't pressurized from tank as with FI.

I don't have a hot air intake hose. Not necessary if choke is adjusted properly. Starts up in the coldest weather. I do have a block heater if it doesn't.

Rust is the worst enemy. And Volvo made it worse by extending the fresh air intake into the rockers encouraging the rust through of the rockers as well as the adjoining floor. I've blocked mine off recently (got ticked-off after previous "professional" repairs rusted out) but am still working on repairing of the rust-through in rockers.

If you're going to own an old car, and aren't rich, then you're going to have to
learn to do the work yourself. Dealers want you buying a new car. They only want cars these days to last about 7 years (good for the company bottom line). Specialists on older Volvo's are retiring and the new ones rely too much on computers.

That's why web sites such as this are needed. I admit that I spend way too much time on the 245 but part of the blame goes to the Brickboard.
