97 965 Power Steering Hose 900

The power sterring line for the driver side was taken off its clips and dragged on the road until it wore a hole in it (this was during a storm, I suspect a rock). The line is grimped on one end and has a clamp on the other. Stranded, I cut the line to the hole and clamped it back on (about 12" shorter). I then refilled it with fluid and headed home. My questions:
1. Why is that hose so long? What are the dangers of driving with it shorter?

2. Do I have to replace the entire line, including the metal and hose or can I have someone grimp on a new line?

Thank you in advance,
coverall

I had that happen to the s90 when my wife was driving it. The hose is long by design. I cut out the bad section and put in a double barb fitting with double hose clamps on either side of the repair. I refilled the pump and bled out the air and it has been good to go ever since. I think I only lost about 2 inches off the length though, and I think the loop was put in for a purpose, though I am not sure why. Hope this helps.

The PS hose has a loop in it to prevent 'banging/hammering' when driving very slow and making a very sharp turn. There's a Volvo Bulletin about it.

    Dear coverall,

Good p.m. and hope this finds you well. It is always possible that the hose is not factory original. That is, someone may have replaced the factory-original hose, with a hose that had compatible connectors, but was far longer than the factory original.

So long as your fix does not bring the shortened hose into contact with moving parts (i.e., pulleys, tires, belts) or hot engine surfaces, your fix should not be problematic.

If you want to replace the hose, get a factory-original replacement from www.fcpgroton.com or from a Volvo dealer. I doubt any garage will have the metal connector, let alone the press needed to crimp it onto the rubber hose.

As you know - more than most of us - this hose is a mission-critical part. it is usually not wise to try to economize on such parts.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
