Debadging without ruining the paint 200 1992

I have a very clean 1992 wagon with the gold clear coat paint. I'd like to ditch the labels, but I'm afraid that even prying or dissolving adhesive will either leave a halo or pull off the clear coat?

Does anyone have a successful technique for this sort of paint?

Hmmm. The front fender plaques are covering holes for side corner lights, right? So I'd better get some corner lights to replace them, right?

Don't know what to do about the emblem in the grille, except maybe replace it with a "Lexus"...or, any other suggestions? Just to mess with people's heads a little.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Doug Harvey

When I put on the IPD side turn signal lights, here's how I did mine. I stold a small plastic spatela from the kitchen. Then I heated the badge up with a heat gun being careful not to get things too hot. As I did this I carefully worked the spatela under the badge. I then cleaned the paint with the 3M adhesive remover and waxed. Paint was fine. Badge is probably not reusable.

Be warned on one point. My front fender on one side was repainted at one point. The clowns did not take the badge off and just sprayed around it. So on that side I now have a rectangle that shows where the badge was. At least the color matches.

Try 3M spray adhesive cleaner and a plastic razor blade. Works on old pinstripe tape with no damage to the paint.

My '82 GLT came to me with ZERO badging. The only thing that says Volvo on the outside of the car is the center caps on the wheels (from an 850, I think.) Point being, someone removed the badging without ruining the paint (it's the original paint on the car.) I wish I could tell you how it was done. As for the grill, the pre 84 (?) grills are all black, and the emblem can be cut out with a hacksaw. Look really cool. i wish I could upload pics of my car...

Hey evry1,

Just done this to my newly acquired 240.

Removed the rear badges with the hair dryer trick. Just use hot water in a bucket and sponge the badges a few times to heat them up then use the hair dryer to heat them up a little further for 60 secs or so. Then use floss (yes dental floss) or a credit card (I like dental floss personally) to cut into the adhesive but try not to rub/scratch the paint at this point, also just try moving the badge up and down and it will slowly work its way off, if it is taking too long repeat the heating process then repeat etc etc etc.

Once the badges are off wash the areas well then use a good polish (not one with an abrasive for f*&^% sake), you will probably have to do it a few times to make it look presentable, obviously the final results depend on the paint's current condition.

As for the side/fender badges, use the same method as the rear ones.

As for front grill, it depends on which one you have. On my 89 I have the one with black vertical grill with a chromed plastic volvo badge and cross-hatch. With this one the volvo symbol and crosshatch comes off after removing 8 or so retaining washers (usually the plastic bits break off instead so this is a one way procedure!!!! you have been warned). Once the volvo symbol is off there is a few bits of black plastic that are between a couple of the vertical black slats (these were hidden by the volvo symbol before), just use a hack-saw blade to cut these little beasties off then use a file to finish. This look isn't for everyone so try and visualise it first as it will be hard to get it back the way it was.

Hope that helps!

Daz
