Neutral Safety Switch?? 900 1995

I have an intermittent no start in my '95 960. Sometimes I turn the key and nothing happens. If I run the selector through the gears, it will typically start right up on the next turn of the key. All other transmission functions are normal. Does it sound like the neutral safety switch? I've changed these out on other makes of cars, is it a difficult job on the 960's?

    Neutral Safety Switch?? 900 1995

    JimE,

What you describe does sound like the typical malfunctioning PNP sensor on these cars. Sometimes the backup lights won't work, sometimes the TCM gets confused and the trans stays in 3rd gear, dash lights flash, etc...

Many folks on this list have changed the PNP sensor. The sensor costs anywhere from $90-110 depending on where you purchase it. Using the "L" position on the shifter often should help alleviate the problem after you install the new one.

The 900 FAQS will help a lot and I'll send you a PM with detailed instructions that I wrote up recently for our 95 960.
