Multiple problems 900 1995

940 year 1995 non-turbo

1: Car cannot restart after stopping (with engine off). No cranking sound but click sound only. If I stop trying to start, get out of the car and stay away for a minute or two and then try again, I may get to crank and eventually get the engine running. May take a longer cranking time though. Happened several times now and getting more frequent. Gettng a bit annoying and embarassing everytime I run down to the grocery or to pick up my kids from school. Check battery voltage - reading above 12V. Mechanic told me it is the alternator but does not make sense since I've read here that alternator is only for charging when car is running. Should have nothing to do with cranking, right?

2: Car vibrates at 40km/h very noticeably but vibration goes away beyond 40km/h. If I maintain speed at 40km/h, vibration stays at this speed and can be felt no matter how far i drive. I know that my front absorbers and the mounts are shot. Could it be the absorbers, or the mounts, or both?

3: Right wheel has significant free play. I jacked up the car and with my hands on the left and right sides of the wheel, I can feel and see significant free play when I rock the wheel in and out. However with my hands on top and bottom of wheel, rocking wheel only gives slight free play. Bearing defective?

The car is getting expensive to maintain recently, so cheap solution preferred.

Thanks once more!

The lack of cranking when hot suggests:
    -failing solenoid
    -bad battery cables (corrosion)
    -failing ignition switch

Bad shocks will accentuate any wheel imbalances.

Is it time for ball joints?

How do I know which is the cause for the no crank situation. I know that my starter does make an after-start grinding sound, meaning when the engine is fired up, there is a continuing grinding noise from the starter for a couple of secs.
Can I nail it down to the starter?

If yes, would you suggest that I get the starter repaired or simply get one from the yard?

How do I know if the ignition switch is going south? Any tests to run?

Battery wire should be ruled out since I do get charges from alternator to battery when engine is running.

      Thanks

    1. Could be something simple, like a dirty or bad electrical connection at the battery or starter. I would clean the connections before replacing parts.

    2. Could be bent wheel, out of balance fron wheel, or a bad tire. Could also be the shocks or upper mounts.

    3. Sounds like a worn inner or outer tierod.

I'd suggest that you look through the 740 FAQ under the features pulldown. The 740 and 900 series cars share a lot of the same mechanical components.

    Good luck!

Tires are relatively new and look okay to me. Bad mount and shocks, I am certain they are. I don't get a bounce when I press the front of the car down. Instead the front stays down and slowly work its way up. Mount I am also certain is bad because I get knocking thuds when going over humps of bumps.

How do I check if the tie rods are shot? Do I just shake these rods to check for freeplay? Forgive my ignorance as I am still new to the DIY fraternity, having started only this year, and after having been had on several ocassions. Ringlee knows better.

      Thanks

      Regards
