Sorry for asking this, but the O/D light is on all the time.... 200

So I'm not quite sure what is the first thing to go at. Reading the FAQ, I have a good idea of how the system works, but i'm feeling stupid today. Anyways, it's an AW70(or 71.....it's an '89 240 anyways) tranny, and the overdrive is intermittently not working. Whenever it stops working, the arrow light on the dash does go on. Pressing the button doesn't always make a difference. It works a lot of the time, then won't work for a while. I'm thinking I'll pull the solenoid and re-solder, but does anyone else have a more specific idea? thanks again,

Nate Gundy

Make sure the fuse is not corroded on ends. Those fuses have caused me a couple issues.

When my fuse blew, the light was on all the time and pressing button made no differance. The fuse blew because the wire going to solenoid was rubbed through and shorted out.

When the wire broke completely in half the arrow light would go on/off with button, but always stuck in 3rd (no overdrive). This is also how it did when first solenoid stopped working totally. Light on/off with button means relay good I believe.

If button doesn't make arrow lamp go on/off, check relay and fuse. A lot of posts about relay being bad solder but my O/D problems have never been that. It is behind center vents accessed through opening with glovebox removed.

Check wiring where it exits shifter stalk, chafing can cause an intermittent short that can disengage OD. Remove the shifter console cover and put shifter in 1 and check with flashlight. Fix is to resolder with shrinktube cover and put rubber edging on bottom of shifter stalk fwd edge.

nothing to re-solder on the solenoid.

Why not re-solder the relay? That's the failure indicated by the up-arrow light on all the time.
