Fuel sending unit and power window relay. 200 1989

FUEL SENDING UNIT: Having looked through the archives on the subject I think Bricksters would tell me that it's not worth getting a fuel sending unit at the junkyard due to the units in general having a limited life span. Right? Are they at all repairable (gas guage not working) and if I do buy a new one how much should I expect to spend?

POWER WINDOW RELAY: How do I trouble-shoot one having gone bad? Can I connect fuse #4 to fuse #10, and bypass the relay? What is the color and location of the PW relay? The Haynes Manual says it's behind the dash just below the vents. I took the dash half apart (memories of the blower motor job!) but I couldn't see any relays with my limited view.
Thanks.

    Power window relay -

The function of the relay is only to prevent the windows from being operative without using the key. It has no other function.

The power to run the window motors flows through fuse #10 (on my 1988 244) which is hot without the key. The relay power comes from Fuse #12, hot with the key in position II or III,

Test all the switches before considering the relay to be at fault. Switches are known to get weird. Mine seem sensitive to high humidity levels!

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Get the sending unit from the pick and pull yard. Make sure your fuses are not corroded and not making good contact..I have had more than my share of fuses acting up..This might also explain your window problem. You did not say if it was a certain window or all or them..The biggest problem I have seen with the windows are the switchs. They tend to not make contact internally.. I have had to take them apart and I silver soldered new contact points on each pin that the rocker hits.

The power window relay is under the central vents clipped to a steel crossmember. It is a metal cube shaped relay in line with the 2 power door lock relays that look identitical to it. Easiest access is to remove the center vents.

The relay would be one of the last things I would check. If none of your windows work I would be looking at the wires in the drivers door hinge. If only one of your windows is not working it is definitely not the relay. It could be a dirty switch contact or a broken wire in one of the door hinges. It is most often the drivers door because it is used the most and the power for all the power windows goes through it.

Au contraire, I, personally, would not get an in-tank unit anywhere but from salvage. Rare to have a tank sending unit fail although the hose does need renewal and occasionally the pump unit as well. Remember the pump is a Delco item, a Chevette fuel pump twin. The relay is one of 3 on the structural crossmember at the heater control level.
