'86 always takes two starts. First crank, pause, second crank..START! 200 1986

It's a wonder the starter and the flywheel are still good. The car has always taken two times to start. When I hold the ignition to start the first time, the engine turns over...and over..then I pause. Wait until everything quiets, then turn the ignition to start and the engine starts right up.

I want it to start the first time. I haven't ever gotten into the fuel delivery side of these 240s..but I'm suspecting that the first crank sorta is "priming" up the fuel rack and the second crank allows the injectors to spray. I'm clueless though. Can you help me with fixing this thing? Thanks,
Cabbie2169

Our 86 behaved the same way until the fuel pressure regulator failed and I repaced it. Always two cranks before always one after, like flipping a switch. I did no other repair or maintenance. Coincidence? Or warning? Let the board know what you find

I thought the fuel check valve was on the intake manifold in line with the injectors. For your sake I hope it is...

Sound like you need a new fuel pressure check valve. It keeps the system pressurized. It is a $10 item screwed onto the end of the main pump under the car.

Good Luck!
