It does depend mostly on which model of radio you have: If you have the single-din CR 915, it definitely does not have an external amp. If you have a double-din SC 900 or SC 901, it definitely will have an external amp. The other SC- units had built-in amplification and did not need external amps, but had provision for them if desired.
Easy way to tell: slide the head unit out far enough to look at the rear:
There will be one black round cable for the antenna; if there is another round black cable, it should be for the amp. You can tell by sliding the head unit out a bit further and looking at the rear side--if one of the black cables is plugged into a slot marked AMP, then you know.
If there is an external amp, there will be a separate sub-harness which connects the amp outputs to the car's wiring harness for the speakers, the amp and headunit to power, etc. To bypass for installation of an aftermarket unit without an external amp:
1. unplug everything from your old unit.
2. Unplug the connector to your vehicle harness if there is an external amp ( otherwise, this was done in step 1),
3. Wire up the aftermarket unit to the proper set of harness adapters, and double-check your connectins, soldering, and insulation,
4. plug the results of 3 into the vehicle harness, plug the antenna lead in, and Bob's yer uncle.
The first one will take a couple of hours, because you're doublechecking everything and figuring it all out. The second one will take about half an hour. By the third installation, you'll be dangerous because you'll think you know it all, and you'll fry someting if you're not careful. BTDT
