Are there 700s to avoid when buying? 700

I know this is a worn out question but I've done alot of research and seem to get alot of conflicting information.
My 240 has become a money pit. The previous owner beat it up pretty badly.
I will definitely replace it with another Brick. My concerns are as follows:
1) I'm a student on a very limited budget regarding costly repairs.
2) I can do moderate work myself, but again parts cost is still a concern.
3) I'm looking for anything reliable in the $4000 - $7000 range.
4) I live in Arizona US (very HOT) and A/C and cooling are concerns.
5) Flash and glammor are at the bottom of my list, reliability is at the top.
Not sure what else I could write. I just need some experienced opinions. I will also be happy to research any links you could provide. I've already used the common ones, BrickBoard, Swedish Bricks, etc.
Thank you
Dan

Are there 700s to avoid when buying? 700

    Hey Dan,

I recommend looking for a '90+ 740/760/940. Look for the nicest most well cared for one you can find. Service records are good. 700s and 900s are known for A/C problems so make sure the A/C is working or at least know what has to be fixed to get it working. It's likely that the cooling system will need a revamp after you buy unless it has already been done by the last owner. I'd look for a non-turbo 4cyl as they are the usually the least problematic, the 2nd being the turbo 4 cyl. I hope this helps!

Well, if relability is the top of yor list, another Volvo is certainly the way to go. Here's the thing: You can buy a pretty good shape 700/900 series from the early 90's for that much money. You could also spend less money on an older car, but it'll require a little more care. You may want to consider looking for a non-turbo, because turbos run hotter than the V6's.

For $4k-$7k, buy a 940. If you find a 740, buy one built after 1988 so the wiring harness does not degrade. Turbos built after around 1990 have the later Bosch LH2.4 system with self-diagnostics; earlier turbos do not. See the 700/900 FAQ for details on how to evaluate a car and what to plan for preventive maintenance. Plan on around $750 in expenditures to bring the car up to reliable operation (new cooling system, brake pads, fluids, etc.)

And then spend the money on a Nissens 3 row all metal radiator.

There is now a MTC brand 3-row. FCP Groton and otheres have it. About $40-50 less than Nissens.

        Nice fit.
