Any tricks for installing the snow cap for the later ('86-93) 240s? 200 1986

I just picked up a snow cap for my '86 244 from Ipd today, but I had a bit of difficulty installing it, and I figured I'd see if anyone has dealt with this before.

Looked in the archives, didn't find anything.

The main problem is this: How the hell do I get those plastic tabs to actually "snap" onto the cover? There doesn't seem to be any amount of pressure I can apply to get them to hook.

Thanks as always.

And even though it doesn't relate to this post, I just took this updated picture of the fleet, so I felt like posting it here:

Silicone adhesive worked great for me 200 1986

Couldn't get one of the tabs to "snap in" on my '92 so decided to use a clear 3M silicone adhesive under each vent cover in addition to the tabs that did "snap in." They are extremely tight yet the seal won't break as the adhesive does allow some "give." Looks great no mess. Love your fleet...very nice looking bricks!!

    Best,
    Adam

I use a hooked tool to pull them forward but you have to make sure the tab is straight and angled (up/down) right to fit into the slot or it will be a nightmare. Make some adjustments with careful bending. Like all else, I learned this the hard way.

Ah So - used a "hooked tool". What, pray tell, sort of tool did you get to work? I scoured my garage and found nothing that was the right shape and the right strength.

It's a PITA to get those clips on. Same type of mounting on my '91, which is well snapped in. On the '86, I just have snippets of double-sided tape on the corners to hold it down.

And Dylan - the least thing you could've done with the fleet pic was to give the '76 an eye and "mow" the grass growing in the middle of the street ...

That is a very nice looking '86 sedan, when did that join the fleet?
I found the instalation of the one piece vent cover on the '80 quite simple, and it fits very well. The twin small covers for the '92, well that was another story. I covered the end of a screwdriver with masking tape as the instructions suggested but was not able to get them on; think I was nervous about doing something that might scratch the paint. The car was going into the shop a couple of days later for something so I wimped out and left the vents and the modified screwdriver in the car and asked the shop install them. There was no separate charge listed for that, and vents are fitting well and very snugly. I think if I had to I could remove the older one-piece cover, but I think the others are on there for life!

Hmmmmm. Did the box have in it the Volvo instructions?

Both mine did, and it was a Volvo box. I have a set on my 1986 and the single on my 1984.

The gist is to (1) put a little slideable piece in between two bars at each end of the covered area. (2) Install the cap by hooking the rear edge protrusions under the grille rear edge and then pushing the front down to get the front protrusions to snap into between two bars.

Then (3) slide the little pieces from (1) forward and pull them until they snap into the caps' front protrusions. Best to have either real strong fingers or some sort of tool.

That will lock the cap in real tight.

I have had holy hell with step (3). Some have snapped in, some not. Those that wouldn't I just left as is. The cap is a bit loose and a pine needle can blow in hard enough to slip out under the cap. If it rattles I cannot hear it. The blower drier at the drive-thru car wash place jiggled the cap pretty hard, but neither came off.

If you aren't going to paint the caps to match, I suggest that you wax them well before installing.

Most of the trapped leaves/needles/debris can be pulled out by hand. Easiest is with the hood up, and the hand palm up.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

Great looking picture! I'm glad finally to get a look at your "new" 240!

If the snow cap you refers to is also known as a vent cover and goes on the hood, just forward of the windshield, then you're probably going to have a lot of trouble getting it on there. I know that with the later hoods, which require two covers, it's nearly impossible to get the covers on without modification (cutting or whatever). I would guess that the same is true for the single-piece covers.

I guess ipd didn't match the mold for the parts quite right. You'll have to see what matches best and then glue or otherwise securely fasten the cover.
