temp and gas gauge don't work - fix? 200 1986

Hi,
I'm new to the brick world and have jumped in with an -86 240dl wagon. I got it w/out the temp. and gas gauges working. Also, perhaps unrelated, the clock and tachometer work only when the interior dash light dimmer is turned all the way off. As you turn it c/c, the tach. actually goes up to it's proper position.
Anyway, to start, I need to fix the temp/gas gauges. I am fine with removing the panel and getting into the cluster electronics, but maybe this stuff is common problems for this car and someone will have a quick answer.
Thanks.

First of all, get a Bentley manual because it has the test for the voltage stablizer that controls the gas & temp gauges. I don't have one with me at the moment, but it's a simple test to do. Or you can just replace the part, it's pretty cheap and easy. Once you get the cluster out and are looking at the back of it, it's that little transistor-like thing all the way to the left. Swap that out for a new one, and while you're at it you should jumper your temperature compensating board, which can give you funky readings on the temp gauge. Do a search for temperature compensating board to find out how and to see the pics. This is also an easy thing to do. I'll bet between the two repairs your problems with the cluster will go away.

My last question is - do I really need to go through Volvo, or can I just go to Radio Shack and get a regulator that meets the spec.s?

Yeah, thanks - after a few hours on the web, I think you are correct. I also saw the previously posted picture about putting in the jumper for the temp. stabalizer. I'm just gonna order the part and put it in, it's cheap enough.
      Thanks for your help.
