Idle below specification (500 rpm ) 700

My 1989 740 has a rough idle, it is around 500/600 rpm. I just cleaned the throttle body but I haven't noticed any change. is it possible that my IAC valve is bad? or is it a bad ECT? Thanks for any reply.

There should be an idle air bypass screw with a knurled knob on the throttle body. Unscrew it a couple of turns to increase the base idle speed up to where you want it.

1989 model year NA cars have LH 2.4, and no Idle Adjustment Knob. The IAC is probably tired. Some people have had success by carefully adjusting the throttle valve idle stop screw to open the throttle valve slightly and bring the hot idle RPM up to 700/750 RPM.

that is not how you adjust bypass knob!

You must ground IAC pigtail located near battery first then set to about 650 rpm, remove ground connection and computer will activate IAC to bring up to 750.

PS: make sure A/C,defrost is not on when setting.

Yes I know about grounding out the pigtail, but since her idle is just 500 rpm that indicates to me that the IAC is not working and won't make any difference anyway!

There are several areas to look at. Assuming you've gone thru the ignition already and the injectors are clean I'd start looking for vacuum leaks.
