Should Timing Have To Be Set After Changing Timing Belt? 700 1988

Got the timing belt changed from info found on this excellent forum:) Started right up, but acts as if the timing might be a little advanced. Got some mild pinging and it died a time or two when engaging the tranny. All my timing marks appeared to line up perfectly.

- Could I possibly be one cog off on belt? Could it still run?

- Could there be enough difference between the old and new belts that the timing needs set?

- Where is sum info on setting the timing? I didn't see anything in FAQ.

P.S. - the belt did break while running at low rpms;it is a B230 non-turbo with 8 valves, so there should be no issues from that, right?

Thank you! Mike.

If you set the marks correctly per the FAQ or the manuals, then it should be fine. But it's easy to get a cog off while mounting the belt. Take off the cover and check it.

Yeah,
He is rite.. double check your work. U could be one or two notch slipped it while tryign to wrap it up... and if u wanna make sure ur doing the rite thing when u alling the timing marks check th eposition of the piston, and the cams ( by opening the cam cover and visually inspect the cam lobes.. it u did it rite when the psiton is TDC valves should be closed and cam lopes should be pointing up or sideway.. Both intake and exhaust..)
Hope this helps

Go ahead and check the timing it does make a difference if you have changed the belt, the old belt streches. The timing will be off some. It will more than likley be some advance. As the old belt weares it does change. Some people just let the old belt go past the change time. How many miles did you go on the old belt.Think of it as abig rubber band as it is pulled on and streched it gets bigger in size.

Check that when the little dimple in the cam timing gear lines up with the mark on the plastic cover that the crankshaft mark is lined up at 0 degrees. The idler wheel on the right has no effect on anything. It was used to drive 240 distributors. The timing should be right, but check with a timing light.
