Wheel compatibility 240DL / 765 GLE 700 1985

Greetings,

Volvo Newbie, just acquired a '85 765 GLE. Need to tow it home from PO this weekend.

I don't know how good the tires are on it, so I'm a little leary of towing on a dolly. I have 2 good wheels from a '87 240DL.

Will wheels from a '87 240 fit a '85 765 GLE?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Mike

Congradulations on your purchase! -and kudos to you for owning a Diesel.

I'm pretty sure that the '85 760 will not have ABS on it, and thus you will have no problem using the 14" wheels from a 240. If by some chance you do have ABS, try putting the 14" rims on the 760 in place of the rear wheels. -there's a good chance they'll fit back there. However, a 14" wheel will not fit over a front rotor/caliper on a 700/900 ABS equipped vehicle.

As far as resources for your new 760 Diesel, there's a board member (Badge988) who knows just about everything there is to know about the Diesel engines installed in the 700 series Volvos. Here's a post of his: (click here)

I would strongly encourage you to purchase a set of the Volvo Green Service Manuals that cover the 700 Diesel engines. They show up from time to time on eBay, and fellow board member Skip Albright (skipskip on eBay) may have a copy lying around. Otherwise they can be ordered new from Volvo at www.volvotechinfo.com. Haynes books are pretty decent as far as a service manual goes, but they lack any info about the Diesels. I would avoid using a Chilton manual.

If you're unable to get your hands on a set of service manuals, let me know and you can borrow my copy of the Volvo 700 Turbo-Diesel service manual (with update) until you can get one for yourself. Click on my name at the top of this post and you'll be able to retrieve my email address and phone number. God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

Thanks all, for the welcome and advice.
I've had to put off the tow till next weekend. In the mean time, I decided to buy new tires and have them mounted on rims from a local boneyard.
I think I'll be a lot more comfortable knowing the rear will be riding on good rubber for the 200 mile tow.

Fitz, thanks for the offer of the manuals. My first chores will involve making sure the motor is healthy enough to spend time on. ( Compression, valve timing, etc. ), since it is not running and I only have the PO's limited knowlege of the car. ( He had it about 1.5 years and never "got around to it" )

I'm hoping I did'nt buy a car that I'll end up parting out.

Time will tell.

Thanks again to all.

Mike

Wheels should be 100% compatible, though most prefer the 15" wheels on a 740 instead of the 14" 240 wheels.

Lug nut's however are not compatible. One has metric lugs and the other SAE.

If the '85 has ABS, no.

Thanks mcduck,

Since I haven't seen the car in person yet, I'll have to go by what Chilton's says, "In 1987, Volvo introduced its Anti-lock Braking System on models in the 700 series."

So my guess is that the '85 will not have ABS.

I bought the car on Ebay for $200. The seller says that the head was reworked, but the local Joe Blow mechanic did'nt know how to set the timing
on the diesel's injection pump.

I'm sure I'll be haunting this forum for more help with it's resurrection.

Thanks again,

Mike
