T belt question for 960 900 1992

Hi , I have never done a timming belt job before but have studied this extensively and thanks to many here on the board ( thanks DEFWPO) I feel like I'm ready.
Should I replace the idler , tensioner , water pump ?

I came across this page :

http://www.Volvospeed.com/Repair/timingbelt.htm

I'm wondering if apart from the obvious clearance needed for the sideways 850 it looks almost like the same setup as the 960.
The pictures do help alot. If anyone has photos for the 960 shure would like to see it.

Also IPD has this tool that locks the cams, but they are for the 850, would it work for the 960?

Thanks a million

VHT

    T belt question for 960 900 1992

    Hi VHT,

AT 150K on our 95 (70K change intervals), I replaced the tensioner, and both pulleys (idler and tensioner) along with the belt. The pump, I left alone. They are very stout and since it didn't leak, wobble, grind or rotate unsmoothly, I left it in.

You don't need the cam locking tool. And performing the T-belt change on the 960 is a little easier than the 850 becasuse of the orientation of the engine.

There are plenty of folks on this list that have changed the T-belts on their 960/90 series so don't hesitate to ask questions if in doubt.

    T belt question for 960 900 1992

In part your answer will depend on the mileage on the car. If it's above 100K, and no record of replacement, I'd seriously consider changing out the tensioner and perhaps the idler. AS for the water pump, again it may depend on mileage, but in my mind the mileage would have to approach 200K before considering this. Both my 960s have over 100K on them and have never replaced the water pump, nor is there any sign of them beginning to fail (amount of 'wiggle' in them) This is not the 240 water pump of old..change with each tune-up at 30K
