Did I do any A.C. damage? 900

Daughter is now a proud owner of a 92 944t.She was not happy to go look at another 'VOLVO',but the 92 is a big step from her trusty 83 242dl.
Shes not too hesitant to put a few $$$$ into it,she likes it alot.I asked the seller if he could evacuate the AC for me and he did. They did have to replace the condensor and I asked him if I should add any oil to the system while charging the system. He said just a small can.
Well needless to say, after I charged the system,I noticed a large green sticker on the dryer saying to 'use only ester oil'.I have added 2 ounces of PAG oil to the mix.
Have I done any time delay damage,or is this small amount insignificant?.
I went back in napa to look at the oils on the shelf and there was only 1 can of ester out of 10 pag,so I just grabbed it without thinking.

now i'm confused,on the wifes 92 960,which has also been converted to 134a has a sticker on the dryer indicating the system has 134a and also to use ester oil.both stickers have volvo printed on them so i guess it's safe to assume both cars were switched using the volvo kit.
it's just going to take a little more investigation.

Hello DM960; The following is from the Dupont 134a product page:"Although HFC134a and CFC12 are chemically compatible with each other, such is not the case with CFC12 and PAG lubricants. Specifically, the chlorine contained in CFC12 or other chlorinated compounds can react with the PAG and cause lubrication degradation. Lubricant degradation can result in poor lubrication and premature failure. In addition, sludge will be formed, which can plug orifice tubes and other small openings."
THe person that did the retrofit on your 944t probably used a POE refrig oil for the conversion. It is the best stuff to use when converting an R12 system because of the problems with the 'leftover' R12 reacting with PAG oils, even with a full flush. A couple of ounces of PAG will probably not hurt much, just use the POE at the next system service.

yes dewfpo, the system has been changed to 134a.it appears it was done by volvo according to the volvo sticker placed on the strut brace.could the the sticker on the the dryer just be the old one when it had R-12?
i've heard that if the 2 oils mix it slowly turns into a tar, clogging things like the evaporator tube(i dont know if that's the right term).
you just gave me some hope that i didn't do the wrong thing, thanks dave

      Dave,

The new dryer should have been shipped to you empty of any oil. Typically when installing such parts you need to add oil to the system to make up for the lost oil that was in the dryer, condensor, evaporator, or compressor when you removed it from the system.

Since you added the correct PAG oil for the R134a system, you should be fine. The sticker on the dryer might be from old stock or it was a specific dryer for the R-12 system.

The metal of the dryer will not be affected by the PAG oil or the R134a and the dessicant bag (if there is one in that particular dryer) should not be effected either. The O-rings are the only thing that I can think of that would be affected. So as long as you used the proper R134a compatible O-rings when installing the dryer and since the system was converted by Volvo, I still think you'll be fine.

    DM960,

Has the R-12 system been switched over to R134a? If so, the PAG oil is the correct oil. I've been told the two oils don't work well together but I am not a chemist, others will quantify I'm sure.
