doing a 740 oil pump with the engine in the car - how bad can it be?

Hey all brickers:

Just got my 88 740 project car back together - did a valave job - reman head and all the sundries. Thought it had a seized cam (from previous owner description of its death). After start-up, I still have problems with the oil light and my impression is a failing oil pump. I thought about taking it out when I had the head off (dumb me for not). I have essentially ruled out a bad oil pressure switch - the oil that came out of it was nasty, so I am leaning towards a clogged screen or worn pump. How bad is it to lift the 740 b-230 and get the pan off? I am thinking about doing the rod bearings too! Can get a febi pump for $99 and standard rod bearings for $21. I have about $950 invested in this car - previous owner put in a rebuilt trans and I just did the head and everyhing else you can image - t-belt, water pump, seals.

How bad can it be? My local garage would probably get me for 300-400.

I've done several oil pump replacements in the car, and the last one took me 3.5 hours from drive in the garage to drive out of the garage.

It is in the FAQ and not a bad job. Just psych yourself up for the first one. Succeeding ones are always faster and easier.

Just bought my pump and rod bearing set - going to forge forward and try to do it. Lifting the engine is going to be a PITA. Hopefully, I won't find any other damage when I get in there. A clogged screen or bad pump would be ok - bearing damage would be a bummer!

Really does make you wonder why they design vehicles to make access limited? I think my 850 oil pump might be easier than the 740.

You can make an inexpensive engine lift or purchase one from Harbor Freight. The homemade version is in the FAQ and Harbor Freight was approximately $60, I think. Good luck,
