Car 'locks up' at start up S90-V90 1998

Here is someting new. My wife called me a week ago saying that the car was "locked up" after she started the engine. The engine was working, but she could not do anything else -- move the tranny from "P" position, open/close windows, move the seats, etc. The main thing was of course the tranny, because she could not start driving without putting tranny into "D" (or "R"). While I was on the phone, she turned the engine off and started it again. This time everything worked and she was able to put tranny into "D". I thought it was some sort of an electric glitch and told her not to worry about it. Well three days later it happened again! (And again I was not around.) This time the trick with turning it OFF and ON did not work (initially.) She tried it 7-10 times but the car was still locked up. So she called me again. I said to her to wait for me to pick her up in 20 minutes. A minute later she called again saying that finally she was able to "unlock" the car after the n-th switching on/off try. Very strange. It has not happened since then. I drove the car on the weekend and I did not notice anything different about the car or the way it drives. Anybody got any ideas about this "locking up" thing?

I had the same with my s90 i just purchase, I had the same electrical problem . I had a combination of problem the release button in the shifter fail to engage and the ignition switch had some play in it. Needless to say I replace the ignition switch the electrical problem went away. I still have a hard time shifting out of park on an incline. I tap the the top of the shifter with the palm of my hand and the release button engage ?? It work for me, I love this car

Make sure you are setting the parking brake FIRST! S90-V90 1998

You mentioned that you are having trouble shifting out of Park on a hill. I hope you already know to never let the transmission hold the car on a hill. This will wear out the parking pawl very quickly.

Best engineering practice when parking is to shift into Neutral, set parking brake firmly, and then when car has stopped all movement and being held in place only by the brake, shift into Park. When driving off, always shift into Neutral (or Drive or Reverse) first, then release the brake. I always follow this procedure, even when parking on the level. It's just a good habit to get into.

If your parking brake will not hold the car on a hill, get it adjusted so it will.

Next time it happens, see if you can just one way or the other to get things to work without turning the key completely on/off.

I had a slightly similar problem with our 98 S90. I started the car but all the gauges were dead and the trans would not shift up out of 1st gear (reverse was fine). I did not try the door locks, windows or seats. Turned the car off, restart and all was fine. Turned out to be the ignition switch.

Thanks, DEWFPO. What made you think your problem was with the ignition switch?

The car was under warranty at the time so I took it to the dealer. The shop foreman came out to look at the car and as he wiggled the iginition switch he was able to get the instrument panel to drop out (go dead). He replaced the iginition switch and it hasn't reocurred since (5 years).

BY the way , my previious note SHOULD have said :

"Next time it happens, see if you can just WIGGLE THE KEY one way or the other to get things to work without turning the key completely on/off."
