stuck in park 200 1992

I've got a '92 240 that was stuck in park. It was towed away, supposedly fixed by a repair shop (I'm not a mechanic). It got stuck a few days later. My invoice tells me they replaced a shift lock solenoid and the shift assembly...all to the tune of $900.00.

I was referred to Brickboard, read the posts about being stuck in park and now I'm beginning to feel I got stuck in someplace other than park...if you know what I mean!

The repair man also told me the shifter assembly only came in one piece (and at at cost of $430.00-shift lock solenoid was $103.00). Help!

Is it possible it took all that to repair my problem(stuck in park) or did I get hosed?

Thanks,
Robert

Usually when this happens it as simple as a blown fuse. If the solenoid on the shift lock is (or was) the problem, then you should have gotten kissed when you paid the mechanic because you definitely got s****ed. If there was truly a problem in the shifter that required it to be changed, you still got a raw deal.
The solenoid on the shift lock releases when the ignition is on and the brake pedal is depressed. It's really simple. There is a release mechanism located in the rear of the shifter slot that can be accesses by a finger. This allows you to unlock the shifter manually if such a problem occurs. Did you get the old (and presumed) replaced parts?

      Thanks Hillbilly,

Can you think of any scenario that would have made them think they needed to replace the shifter assembly AND the shifter solenoid? I obviously don't want to pay (I always purchase repairs on a credit card for issues like these and to date have not paid my bill) for something I didn't get, but don't want to take money out of a man's pocket if I'm not right.

And if they DID do what they SAID they did I'm assuming that baby should shift as smooth as glass. (of course, it has already gotten stuck again) Right?

      Thanks,
      Robert

Get yourself a Bentley manual and start reading.. This will be one of the best sources of information on your car. I am sure that someone will be able to help with your problem, as for myself I am a manual tranny guy.. Sorry. But I do think that you could have gotten a complete transmission from a pick and pull (junk yard) for about the same price you paid just to have the shifter fixed..More will come to your rescue, be patient..
