taking apart M41+OD 120-130

I just acquired an M41+OD unit as one piece. With my limited experience with these so far, I don't even know if there is oil in it. How can I check if there is oil in the M41, or the OD? Are each unit seperate "compartements" such that I can safely detach each at the middle without splling oil all over? In other words, they don't share the same oil, do they?

Thanks All!

Here's a good link for the OD, if it's a J type:

Thanks "Pearl",

I've seen that great set of articles before but lost the link to them. Cool to think that they also use Laycock's in Jaguars!! ... it's such an exotic sounding name and all.

They share the same oil.

There's a square-headed plug at the bottom front right of the gearbox, and there's another hex-headed drain at the rear underside of the OD (exact location varies with type of OD).

Get out all you can, and be prepared for another half cup or so to spill all over when you split off the OD.

But if you just want to check the oil, the filler plug is another square-head a few inches above the gearbox drain. Oil should be up to the bottom of the hole that one occupies.
