Buying a low mileage 1992 240 DL 200 1992

Since my son needs a reliable vehicle to move around in the college campus, I have been looking for a low mileage car, preferably a Volvo for him. We currently own a 1986 245 DL with 220K miles and it is very reliable.

Recently I found this 1992 240 DL with only 70K+ miles on it. The car has its normal body scratches and dings, nothing major. The two wheel hubs on the passenger side are damaged but still firmly attached to the wheel rims. The tires are OK (with about 40% thread left). A plastic piece (of the front bumper, passenger side) is loose and hangs from the front bumper close to the front fender. But the seller does not have all the maintenance records since her father kept them. The seller wants $4900 and no less.

Is this a good deal or bad deal? I am in California.

I'll be a bit cautios on low mile Volvos with that much body damage. I'll look somewhere else. The condition the car is in points to mostly city miles, hence the low miles and all the dings and broken stuff

Picked up an'89 244DL three months ago w/137,000 miles and full maintenance records for $1,400.00. No scrapes, dents, leaks, perfect interior, no rust, and non faded paint. I'm the San Jose Ca area. You can do a lot better than $4,900 for a 240 that is not in perfect condition.

looking at the orlando sentinal today,,, 1992 volvo 240, 101k says mint condition 2800$ they would likly take less and a 1987 245 7 passenger 78 k auto with the a/c perfect 2200/obo.

heres got to be a funny typo, 1991 780 4speed 2dr 200k on the clock onl 650000 i a msure they mean 6500$ but i think thats even way way too much for a car with 200k volvo or not.
i know wages are much higher out in calipornia, but i agree thats way to much for the vehicle described, i recently purchased a 2nd vehicle due to the rise in fuel prices and my short commute to work. i purchased a honda ruckus scrooter that gets me 90 mpg should be good for colledge campuses and got it tags taxes for 1750$ out the door and i dont believe i will loose on the investment as very few of them are available used and the resale is typically high. unless you kid weighs more than 220 lbs it would be ideal.

$4900 sounds like a ridiculous amount of money for a 13 year old car. It had better be in MINT condition for that price. It sounds like it's in less than mint condition, and who knows if it's been serviced regularly as there are no maintenance records.

What's with all these low mileage 240s popping up for sale at ridiculous asking prices lately? People need to realize that their 13+ year old less-than-perfect car is not worth $5000. I think I could buy three or four bricks in decent running condition for that price. Low mileage means NOTHING if the car has not been serviced. You might end up spending $5000 on the car and another $2000 catching up on maintenance.

(BTW I paid $500 for my 85 DL w/ 140k miles)

I was wondering that also. Or the more general question of, why do people think that low mileage is worth a premium price on a used car, especially one that isn't in the best of condition and does not have service records?

I am skeptical of any VOlvo without full maintenece records. I would do a Carfax on the car to confirm the mileage. If the owner is unable to confirm the mileage don't buy it for $5000. You can do better buying a high mileage car if you can confirm that the proper maintenance was performed and the mileage is correct.

I never buy a Volvo 240 without know everything about the history of the car. That strategy has provided me with three wonderful 240's.

Good Luck
