What happened to my battery?!?!??! 200 1982

After school today I decided to mow the lawn. I suddenly started to shower so I grabbed a key closed the sunroof and rolled up the windows. They're power windows. Anyhow, I went back to mowing the lawn. About three hours later I started to get hungry so I fired up the grill, then ran out or LP gas in the tank. Jumped in the Volvo and NOTHING. Apperently I had left the key in the ignition switch in the run position this whole three hours. Luckily I had a spare battery laying around and now my stomach hurts from eating too much bar-b-que! What on Earth could have happened? None of the accesories were on so I don't see what could have drained the battery. Any ideas or expeiences with this.

P.S I just finished replacing every suspension component on my 244 and got it all aligned at Sears. WOW!! It's like a new car...I could not have even dreamed of doing this all by myself without the help of all the geniuses (sp?) here on the Brickboard- THANKS EVERYONE!!!

The blower runs even in position one of the blower switch.

AHA! Ofcourse, the blower; why didn't I think of that? I jumped the battery and charged it up and tested it with my multimeter - it seems fine. Maybe when I replace the blower motor (it is kind of loud and inefficient) I will wire up some sort of kill switch to avoid running it all the time. Thanks for all your help!

The blower runs on low to keep the system dehumidified.

OK, so the system is energized. But in my experiences with cars this instance seems to me to indicate that I need a new battery(?) or am I underestimating the load put on the battery by the warning lights, etc of my rather typical Volvo? I just cannot believe this - oh well, I'll take your word for it. Lesson learned. Did I damage my batery by running it down?

If you jumped the car and drove around for about a half hour, it's probably fine.

Double check the Voltage using a Voltmeter with the car off. It should give about 12 Volts. When running, you should get about 14 volts (13.5 is acceptable, but not great).

As for what drained your battery, maybe the radio was left on, but turned down all the way (making it seem as though it was off), heater fan maybe, etc... Just some random guesses.

Then again, the discharge might not be related to the key being left in the car. If you come back in a few days and find the battery dead again, something else is up.

      Good luck!

If the key is in the run position, it will surely run down your battery because the ignition system is energized.
