Screwy ac clutch 900 1993

The AC compressor clutch stopped working today on my '93 940t.
I checked for juice at the wire going to the clutch...12volt, jumped a wire directly from the battery hot to the other section of wire continuing to the clutch and it engaged the clutch.
I cleaned the connector and put conductive grease in it and put it back together.... no clutch.
Then after going through this whole routine a number of times I noticed that when I re-attach the wire connector the engine seems to drag down a bit and when I pull the connector apart, the rpms jump up for a few seconds before settling back down, like there was an excessive draw on the alternator when connected.

Am I looking at an internal clutch failure or could I be missing something here?

Thanks---------

Buddy when you jump the clutch lead from the +battery post use a VOM meter to do it that is capable of measuring DC current (at least 10 amps). If the clutch elec current draw is 5 amps or less and the low freon psi switch is not interupting ops then Spook is right, listen to him. If it is over 5 amps you hava a clutch/compressor type problem. The AC control board Spook mentioned is a very, very common problem for us 940 owners and sooner or later it will fail for you, so get with the info/tecquine.

    Good Luck

Your clutch is ok, but won't actuate if you have low freon pressure in the system, high pressure due to a clog or restriction in the system, or a problem with the A/C controls.

I don't have any suggestions, but my clutch has been acting up too on my 95 945. I did the FAQ soldering trick and reflowed the control board, and I thought it worked, for a day. Now it is acting up more than ever. It will just disengage the clutch while driving. If I step on the gas hard, the clutch will engage for a bit and then disengage again. Please post on what you find. Thanks.

    Dear Robert,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. The problem likely is in the aircon control unit. The solder joints between the relay (switch) and the circuit board have failed. Alternatively, the solder joints between the connector and the circuit board have failed.

There should be in the FAQs, under FEATURES (above) a procedure to re-flow the solder to restore these connections.

The break likely is too small to be seen, so reflow the solder at the four points where the relay connects to the board, and the 12-14 points at which the main connector is attached to the board.

Post back if this is not clear or if you do these things, and the system does not work properly.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
