B16 temp gauge/sender 444-544 1959

Looks like I'm going to rescue another one. '59 544 B16. Since I like adventures, I'm going to drive it 300 miles home. The temp gauge is inoperable but I have a spare mechanical gauge off a B18. Anyone know if the threads in the head are the same from late B16 to early B18?

First, I refuse to contradict McDuck.

When I retrofit a B18 into a 444, the sending unit from the 444 fit right into the B18 head. So I don't understand why the reverse wouldn't work. This was a '58 which had had a B16 motor in it. go figure.

    Bob;

    Your worse (better?) than me!

I can't answer your thread question either, but in a pinch, goop it in there as best you can with thread sealant and/or a piece of rubber hose, then loosen the rad cap to prevent having to seal against pressure.

    Good Luck

So you got something sorted out, eh Bob? Congratulations, and thank you... now I don't have to buy it :-)

As for the temp sender... I really don't have any idea, My inclination would be that they may well not be compatable.. if only for the reason that B16 cars are mostly metric, and a B18 is presumably standard. I'm sure you could find adapter parts locally though when you get to Golden.

But being the adventurous fella you are, I wouldn't worry about it. Heck, don't even bring any extra water for extra fun.

So... when are you fixin' to pick it up anyhow?

    -Matt

As far as threads, they may or may not be compatible. If it's just the threads, go to a good hardware store and find two brass fittings - ont that will screw into the head and one that fits the sending unit. Then buy whatever fitting you need to connect the two parts. You can easily add a warning light to your stock system by installing a 'T' fitting with the stock sending unit on one end and a temp switch on the other.

If all else fails, just get by with an aftermarket gauge until you get home.

As far as using a rubber hose as a temporary connector, the cooling system on these engines is SUPPOSED to be unpressurized, so you shouldn't have any problem with blowing off a hose if you try that.

(Pressurizing the cooling system leads to several problems; blown out heater coils, blown out radiators, overheating, etc.)

Good luck! I drove my 'new' PV544 home from San Jose, CA - about 400 miles. No problems!

(Added) Oh, yeah...I understand that one of the major changes was the length of the sensor. I don't know if they went to a shorter one or a longer one...but the long one doesn't fit the block that used the shorter one...

If they are supposed to be unpressurized why do the specs call for a radiator cap of a specific pressure range?

Yeah, I thought they were like 3.5 psi or something. The 122 calls for 7 psi.

          Mike!
