Dear BradinVA,
May this find you well. These problems are almost surely caused by faulty ground contacts. Here are some ideas, which may be helpful:
(a) Buy at an auto parts store, a can of de-oxidizer, and spray the contacts on each lamp holder, and light bulb cluster. This is a good thing to do, by way of preventive maintenance. Very little corrosion - sometimes an invisibly small amount - is enough to produce erratic light operation.
(b) Using a Multimeter, check to see that each ground wire is making a good connection between the cluster and the body (the ground wire - black - runs from the a spade connector at the top of the cluster, to a point just inside the rear lip of the carpeted panel, on either side of the cargo bay). Check to see that the ground wire connections are tight and corrosion free.If you can wiggle the ground wire at a connecting points, that likely is the root of the problem. The connections should be tight.
(c) If, perchance, you should break the contact tab on a lamp holder, you can get one at a salvage yard. These clusters are the same for every 940 and 740 wagon, so if a yard has these cars on hand - and one of the light clusters is damaged - you should be able to get a lamp holder for little money. Failing that, Volvo dealers will have them.
If doing these things does not help, please post back. There are other potential sources of trouble, but it is best first to tackle the common ones.
Yours faithfully,
spook
