wierd engine/starting problem 200

I could sure use some help on this one. I've a 1981 240 with the K-jetronic CIS fuel injection. Symptoms started as running rough, then no idle, now not starting. The fuel pump relay is good. The fuel flow seemed low and there was high resistance on the fuel pump itself so itis has now been repalced with a new Bosch one. There is spark, but no fuel at the injestors while cranking. The fuel filter has good flow. I can get it started by squirting contact cleaner into the air intake and whe it is running at 1/3 constant throttle input the engine will run rough, sputter, and bacfire into the intake (reminds me of an engine being way out of time). I'm still thinking it is a fuel problem but I do not know what to do nest on thei CIS system or maybe I am going the wrong way. Anybody have any ideas or experience on this kind of thing?

There won't be any fuel from the injectors during cranking unless the air meter plate is raised. Check this and that the cold start injector sprays. I would first check ignition timing, timing marks alignment, spark right at plug connectors, vacuum leak (hose off or split, brake booster check valve, injector seals), and compression. Ignition timing on non-running engine can be approximately checked by turning crank timing mark to 8 deg BTDC(or timing for your motor) and see if fingers in distributor are aligned. Remove oil cap and see if cylinder #1 cam lobes are pointing up in a V for compression stroke.

Also check that rotor is pointing exactly at cyl #1 and for cracks inside cap.
