Need car now for daughter. Going to look at a (pretty sure it's a 940)turbo car this weekend.I told myself I would not get another turbo car.Dont get me wrong,I love boost, but I've had replace turbos on both my past GLT's.It's a real PITA to do the job and of course the expense.
He's driving this car right now(sells volvo's to)and says it run good but we'll have to put some hood hinges on and there's scratch's.I know him well and that's where I get my used parts cheap.I've almost stripped a 964.
Since it will daughters making me the mechanic,I DONT WANT TO replace any more turbos. We need something right now and he'll take $1500. So anyone got it laying around.....ha ha.
If anyone around Louisville has a decent one for sale, e-mail Davmor5@aol.com
can be 240~900 series, daddy wants a big block Nova, dont forget the 4 speed.

your right alex about the things that need replaced.
the 700~900 series seem easier than the 240,and more room to.

At $1500, if it doesn't need major repairs.. that's an excellent deal.
Of course be prepared to do all the typical 700 series stuff. Lube the brake pins, do the strut rod bushings (replace with the polyurethane units), etc.
On the 240 turbo replacement, I think most of the hassle was from the some of the stock equipment. If you were to go with a 700 series style exhaust, switch over to some manner of EFI, etc.. you'd gain a bit more room to work on the exhaust side.

I've gotta say.. I would rather replace a turbo than do a head gasket on a white block or 16V motor.
The 900/700s have a significantly wider engine bay, and the 90+ models have physically smaller turbos. Sure it's probably a big pain, but I can't imagine you'd be doing the replacement more than once in the time that your daughter would be owning the car.
All in all I've owned some very neglected cars.. and none of the turbos have made any significant smoke at normal boost pressure.
If you're really uncomfortable with the prospect of a turbo, consider holding out for a non turbo model.

it is a 92 940 turbo 199k miles.just looked it over but didn't drive it yet.i'll wait till money in hand and then negotiate if need be.i forgot to ask about records,he usaully gets auction cars and they were busy today getting things ready for their own auction of heavy equipment/military vehicles this weekend.i said i'd talk next week after that is over.
i'm still trying also to work a trade of sorts for a 6 series 635 bmw he has right now.very nice solid project car.engine sounds great just needs to be massaged back, looks a little neglected. 3.5 liter,6 cyl.,5 speed,2 door coupe.

of course $1500.00 is a good price, but for what? exactly?
turbo or non turbo, the overall condition and manitenance history
are really the issue, I drive a '91 940se turbo, FOR LAST 4 YEARS
ITS BEEN FINE. the turbo is original and at 162,000 miles I have more
issues with other minor stuff

The key to turbo longevity is synthetic oil. The turbo on my 940 has had Mobil-1 its entire life. It has 186K miles on it, and it spins like brand new -- no shaft slop at all.

I think that it sounds like a nice car for the money. Yes, the turbo is probably a pain to replace, but how often do you have to do it?
Good luck and happy bricking!
