1990 16 valve top end noise 700

After sitting for several days to a week, I get a lot of lifter noise on start up. It goes away and runs well after a few seconds. This is the B234f DOHC 16 valve motor with 124,000 miles. Any similar experiences or comments. I hope I'm not looking at an oil pump problem. It has good oil pressure when running. OIl and filter recently changed.

I agree, lifter noise is what you're hearing and it's relatively common with the B234F. It's no cause for concern if it goes away within a minute or so. The owner's manual simply says to go easy on acceleration until the lifters have pumped up and the noise dissipates. Regular changes with a good quality oil can help flush out the grunge that's often preventing the check valve from sealing properly. Always use a quality oil filter like Volvo, Mann, Mahle-Knecht, Bosch and the like.

the hydraulic lifters in the b234 have a check valve that prevents the oil from draining out of the lifter. Sounds like you could have a bad one.
