Wire to AC: What is the little square thingy on the electrical wire to AC clutch? 200 1986

What is the little square electrical thingy on the wire. I just put a new compressor on my '86 and it didn't have the little square elecrical thingy in the picture. Do I need this part in order to get the AC switch on the dash to work??

It's a diode to limit the induced voltage when the clutch is de-energised; it's not absolutely necessary, but it makes the switch contacts last longer.

      Cool. Diode.
By the way, do you know how the AC knob works? For some reason, I can't get it to electrically engage the compressor. What are the connections to the knob? (there are several) I think I may have gotten something unplugged when I replaced the blower motor last week. I noted that one wire from the AC switch is a temperature sensing wire attached to the outlet of the evaporator. I have a '86 240 by the way.
      Thanks,
