Disconnect battery before charging? 200

I've always disconnected my battery before charging it to be safe. But, is this really necessary? Thanks.

I leave things connected. However I was curious as to what the manual for my charger states. It says in no uncertain terms to leave the battery cables connected and charge it using the frame as the ground as Chris stated. It cites the same reason; the out gassing of the battery can build hydrogen gas and with the negative clamp as far away from the battery as possible then it would lessen the chance of igniting that gas. The other reason I leave the cables on is because I don't feel like taking them off every time and having to reset my radios settings.

I think it's a good shop habit to disconnect the cables.

I never do, have had no problems. Best to attach the positive clamp to the battery, then the negative to a good ground on the body, then unhook it after charging in the opposite order. This way, any spark is away from the battery, which can generate hydrogen gas under charge.
