Bought 940 GLE w/ some problems. 900 1991

The main problem with the car is that the head is in the trunk ;)

Just picked up a 240k 91 940 that bent some valves when the timing belt failed. The p/o had the head fully rebuilt and it looks like an EXCELLENT rebuild job. For the price I got it for, I probably couldn't have even gotten just the head rebuilt!

I just have some generally 940 questions, like general things to look out for on these cars other then the obvious belt failure problem. I'd like it to get running and reliable if at all possible before I even think of putting a small block in it.. which is what I *really* wanted the car for anyway.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Well, most of the info that you are looking for is in the 700/900 series FAQs on this site. You can find out the maintenance requirements, suggestions for what to do after buying a used Volvo, and find out all sorts of repair tips, including replacing the head and all the quirks of your particular engine (I figure that you must have the six cylinder engine, so look carefully at the suggestions for it).

    The FAQs are at: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/

    Hope this helps.

      Mike,

Thanks I stumbled onto that last night after I posted the message. It's actually the B234F motor that's in there. Guess what, they're prone to timing belt failure! Not that I mind so much, hopefully all the parts are there to put it back together! Again, thanks.

actually they are only prone to failure if you don't change the belt to schedule - then WHEN it does fail things get messy (note the b230f is - theoretically - a non interference engine so you can 'get away with' a belt issue, the b234 most definately 'interferes')

I never understand why people have issues then complain, its simple you change timing belts to schedule (unless your like me and figure that twice as often is a good idea...) OK you CAN get mega unlucky and have one fail early - but lets face it you could get mega unlucky and have a con rod fail for no apparent reason but it aint likely! - if you dont change belts sooner ort later they go and when they do its your own fault....

Timing chains are worse to change/adjust/service and if you have every seen the mess when one snaps (I have - admittedly my guess is it was doing about 20k rpm when it let go...) you would think a belt was a fine idea!

My experience with many cars of 100's of thousands of miles is providing you change them you dont get issue - and its the first job i ALWAYS have done on any car I buy REGARDLESS of what the history says....

think of it as cheap insurance...
