Help With Fuel Filter And Check Valve Replacement! 200 1988

I have a 1988 240DL. I am going to replace some fuel delivery parts to try and cure the hard starting and loud rattle I am getting out of my fuel pump. My first questions center around the fuel filter and check valve. While working on my rear brakes I spotted the fuel filter near the left rear tire. What is the best way to get working access to the filter? I am assuming I must get the car up high on jack stands. Is that correct? Second what are the directions for replacing the filter? The FAQ directions do not seem to be for the 240. Second set of questions are about the fuel check valve. Where is it located and what do I need to do to replace it? What are the size of the flare nut wrenchs I will need to do this work? I will also be replacing the pre-pump so any advice on that will also be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Don't use an electric impact wrench (for obvious reasons!) Don't use anything that will create sparks.........

Yah like the other poster said... filter, main pump, and check valve, all on a plate mounted under the car, I think it was around the center of the floor, a bit in front of the fuel tank.

Drop off the complete assembly, couple screws, fuel hose to tank clamp, and other side clamp, and two wires to the pump.

Put it on the bench, and undo the connection using tow relatively large wrenchs. Be VERY CAREFUL of the small hose between the filter and pump, if you twist it the hose is "plastic" and will break. Same goes for the line going from there to the front of car. I think fcpgroton sells the small hose.

The rest is really simple, make sure you get new copper washers with the replacment filter. New fuel line clamps too. Cut 1/2 inch off the existing line to clmap on a new section.

The check valve completely fixed my hard warm restart problem two years ago.

As for your loud pump, more likely your in-tank pump (transfer pump) is not working. You should fix that soon.

Check FAQ, these items are all pretty much identical to 700/900 cars.

Main fuel pump, check valve and filter are all located in a cage like housing mounted on undercarriage at about drivers seat. Never heard of a filter anywhere else. Perhaps the work of some hack mechanic.

The 240 fuel system is essentially the same as the 700.

earlier 240s had the filter under the hood, attached to the firewall in front of the driver- my 81 242 does. But the pump & check valve are both under the car as others indicate.

i want to change the fuel filter in my 740 turbo 91 i read and understand everything,but wont i need a catch pan when i change the fuel filter? im assuming oil filters are like fuel filters..junk comes out everywere when you change an oil filter.

I don't remember the wrench sizes. The main pump & filter is in a cage just forward of the driver's side rear tire. The check valve screws onto the end of the main fuel pump.
It is easiest to undo the fuel line from the tank & the delivery line & remove the cage as an assembly.
Depressurize the system pressure first. This is best done outside in the open air .........When you remove the rubber hose coming from the tank be prepared to get soaked with gas.... a 3/8 " short ratchet extension works great to plug this line. Have some rags & a catch pan ready Remove the banjo fittingThen you can take this to your workbench to install the filter & check valve. The fittings are very tight & require good quality tools or air/electric impact wrench to install or remove. If you don't properly torque the fittings on installation you will have a fuel leak.
The procedure is covered under FEATURES/700/900 FAQs. There are some precautions about the air bag sensor (if you have one) and not playing your car radio while the fuel system is open. PLEASE BE CAREFUL & If you don't feel comfortable doing this see a repair shop. Search the archives here for some great tips!

OK, thanks to all who replied. I am awaiting the parts from FCP. When they arrive and the rains subside I will take a whack at this job. I think I will start with the pre-pump as this is most likely causing my problems. I always feel uncomfortable getting under the car. Do you think there will be enough room for a hefty boy like myself to change the fuel filter if I get the back end up on the gray plastic Rhino Ramps?

I changed mine without jacking the car up. If you just undo the three bolts that hold the fuel pump & filter cage it will drop down enough to loosen everything. I also removed a couple of clips holding the fuel line running to the fuel rail to get more slack. (I'm a big guy too!)
