DRY TESTING 91 740 FUEL PUMP 700 1992

OK, I replaced the in tank fuel pump. Prior to install, I "shortly" ran the pump alone hooked up to battery I have in the garage. It ran fine with direct hookup-up to the pump alone. I "did" try to run the pump after wiring up the entire assembly, rehooking all four wires properly, but pump wouldn't come on. I installed in tank anyway, rehooking the neg term on battery and tried to start. Car "momentarily" tried to start, but would not run. Also I could never hear the pump run. I am afraid I've not got the assembly put together properly, (ie: float separate from pump,(allowing free movement of float), and/or not in tank properly). Any geniuses out there who think they may "hit" on the "simple" solution for my dilema? Also, I have the unit out of the tank and will bench test again.

    DRY TESTING 91 740 FUEL PUMP 700 1992

As my mechanic pointed out to me when I was trying to figure out a wierd no start issue recently, in the event of an ignition fault the pumps are turned off automatically as a safety mechanism (I believe). This means that a failure of the pump to turn on doesn't necessarily mean the pump doesn't work.

First off I would test the pump by jumping the two sockets at the fuel pump relay. Take a piece of wire, crimp two male flat ends on it, and plug the two ends into 30 and 87/2 on the relay socket (should be middle right, front left). The pump should immediately come to life. Assuming it does pull the wire and move on to further diagnosis, since the problem isn't the pump.

Its hard to screw up a pump in my experience. You connect it to the wires, stick it in and bam, that's it. More or less idiot proof. The more likely cause would be torn or broken wiring somewhere (like at the tank's sender assembly), a bad fuel pump relay, in the boot in the rear, etc. Check the ground by teh wheel well as well.

    Best,
    rt
