The lazy man's solution to reluctant overdrive 200

(Car is an '80 but trans/OD & electrics are from an '84)

So what I have found is that when the overdrive is hesitant, if I reach over and give the the underside of the dash a gentle whack with the heel of my hand it kicks in every time.
Obviously I am prodding the relay to go ahead and work but why does it need this encouragement? This sort of solution is only acceptable in the short term. I want it to work properly.
I have examined the guts of the relay under magnification and I can see some fractures in the solder around some of the leads and I intend to try and fix it. But is that alone going to be the cure? It would seem to me like the contact isn't wanting to close and whacking the dash is just enough to get it to go ahead and do so. What's the fix for that condition?

On soldering.
I have looked in the archives and found a lot of useful info but I still think I'm going to f**k something up if I don't set about doing it correctly. Is the object of this excercise to resolder all connections? Or just those with visible fractures? My biggest qualm is my soldering iron. It's your common garden variety 25w pencil with a 5/32 tip. It seems to me that I should be using a tip that more closely resembles an ice pick. What do I need to do here?

Is the relay necessary? Ie. The '80 has an M46 without a relay while the '84 has an M46 with a relay.

So, couldn't you just use the electrics from the '80 which is just a switch on the gear shift?

I could and would have if the donor car had the earlier set up. But I already had the stuff from the '84.

Same problem for me...the damn overdrive wouldn't kick on and my wife drove me nuts over the resultant fuel consumption...the fix was too easy...remove the cover from the relay, plug in your soldering iron and have at it...the iron you have will do the job fine, just remember to make sure when you are resoldering that the connection has a nice shine to it when you are finished. This will indicate that you had just the right amount of heat in the connections to avoid a hot or cold solder joint. Make sure to use a resin core solder and don't use flux...Good luck and let us know how you make out!

What was I worried about? 200

So I sat down last night, soldering iron in hand, and proceeded to fix the relay. It couldn't have been much easier. Amazing the way the solder doesn't stray from the trace. I guess that's what I was worried about. As you can tell I'd had no experience in this type of endeavor before. Now I can't wait to re-solder every relay I can get my paws on. Even the ones that don't go in my car (got a few other left-over '84 relays).
I haven't driven the car yet so I don't know for sure if it's the fix. But I don't know why it wouldn't be.

So now that I have driven the car... 200

...overdrive engages as it should. Hit the button, it's in. Every time. I really should have done this when I was installing the whole set up last year. Fortunately the relay is easy to access.

Sounds like a skill that should be developed. Someone suggested in a thread from the archives to practice on a junk board. I think I'll do that.
60/40 rosin core, .032" dia. was recommended so that's what I got.

The lazy man's solution to reluctant overdrive 200

i have removed my overdrive relay and hung it out between the console dash panel (near hvac controls) and the glove box. i re-grounded the relay to the glove box frame (under door, lower left screw). mine did an intermittent thing for awhile, only to find it was almost completely ungrounded, not really screwed to anything. (a good "friend" made this possible). i switched it out with another one. check your ground. if not, if youve removed the cover on the relay then youv'e already let all the "volvo" out of it and its useless.
    just kidding.
