Front oil seal replacement issues -89 745GLE 700

I've currently got the timing belt off and am replacing seals. The auxillary shaft seal was in deep and I couldn't extract it, so I removed the seal housing. Two questions:

1.Haynes says to fit gaskets dry unless otherwise stated - should I fit the new seal housing gasket dry? (I always used to use vaseline)
2.Some small fragments of gasket have fallen into the front of the sump - is this a problem?
3. What's the best way to hold the camshaft sprocket while tightening?

Thanks in advance for your opinions. Regards.

1. I hate leaks and these seem to dribble oil. Use any easy to clean off gasket goo handy. I have been using sensor safe silicone RTV. I have also been using Loctite #242 for screws since one vibrated out at the rear seal carrier. http://brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=814706
2. I don’t know if it’s a direct feed into the sump, not sure. Can you poke a Q-tip in there? Without loosing it? Drain the oil and try pouring oil in there to flush out the bits. If it dumps into the sump quickly then dump in a quart. Then don’t worry about it.
3. Yup, you need the tool.

Front oil seal replacement issues -89 745GLE 700

Hello Bill, Sure, I will give it a shot. 1. I always use Permatex High Tack spray gasket for a little extra seal, and to help hold the gasket in place. 2. I donno, maybe! 3. The Volvo harmonic balancer removal tool fits the cam and int. pulleys on my 940 to lock them for removal/install, but not the 240 that I have torn apart right now. I do not know if it would fit the 700 series. Probably. If not then it is the old belt and vise grips time. Hope this helps and good luck!

When I changed the seals on my 760 and 740, I found that whoever was there last had used red rtv silicone gasket maker on both. A couple mechanic friends told me they always do to help the seal slide in and give them a little better seal. I did on both and so far so good. I ran into trouble when I had to take the seal housing cover off and did not have a gasket. I made one and it was to thin so the aux shaft wouldn't turn. I made one out of 1/32 gasket material and it worked. It is a close tolerance there.
Good luck,
RayH
