240 CIS won't start 200 1982

Hi Folks,

I have a 240 in great shape. The starter got weak and would not engage at all. Worn out I suppose. So I bought a new one. It spins the engine easily. The problem I have now, is that it won't start/run at all. In the past when I turned the key I would hear the chattering sound etc. Now, nothing - just the starter spinning. I took the rubber bellows off of the fuel metering body and turned the key to ON, pulled one of the fuel injectors out of the manifold, and lifted the air valve. I expected to see fuel streaming out of the injector into a container I had rigged up. I did this because I could not smell any fuel after several attempts at starting the beast. But Nothing. Could some one direct me to what I should try in order to get the fuel injectors working. I would like to trace the electrical power to the pump but I do not know where the fuel pump relay is located or what color wires are connected to it. I have quite a bit of auto repair experience but I am new to Volvos. The car has CIS and the Constant Idle System with Lambda oxygen sensor feed back . The car is in good cindition with a lot of new stuff e.g. wires cap rotor timing belt etc. All seem to be set correctly but I am not getting any fuel to fire it up. Could any one help please? Thanks very much for any suggestions ALynn

For a quick test of the fuel pump just jumper the #5 and #7 fuse together. This eliminates the fuel pump relay. If the car starts, check out the relay and it's related wiring. Remove the jumper when your done.

Along the lines of wiring, my 81 had deteriorating wire insulation. When you replaced the starter, did you notice the solenoid wiring insulation? Mine had come off and the wires were shorting/grounding, not allowing the car to start.

The fuel pump relay is located under the dash above the drivers knees. It should be green or black. Check the fuses to the fuel pump(s) first. This may be causing the problem. They're located beside the drivers left knee. If the fuses are good, unplug the fuel pump relay and jumper between the red and yellow/red wire. The pumps should run. You can hear the main pump under the car near the left rear wheel. Listen thru the gas tank fill hole for the in-tank pump. The car will run with this jumper installed. If it runs, replace or repair the relay. If it doesn't, confirm that you have voltage to the pumps. If you do and the pump doesn't run, replace the pump (main most likely). If you don't have voltage, look for loose wiring or connections.

Hillbilly,

Thanks for the info on where to find the fuel pump relay. It was bad!! It would work when it wanted to.. which was not often... Drove me mad almost. I jumpered the wires that plug into the relay, and the pump worked. Got pressure to the metering body, and when I lifted the air valve, gas squirted from the injector. I had removed the injector from the head to see if I was indeed getting gas to the combustion chamber. The pump itself was new . So I will get another relay and I am sure it will run. As for the wires being in a deteriorated condition.. I have replaced the harness already. Thanks again for the answer to my question. It was much appreciated. Alynn.

Well I took the cover off of the relay and plugged it back in and tried to start the car with the key and at the same time I watched the little contact points. Sometimes they would move and sometimes they would not. I can't see where there is a solder problem at least it is not evident to my tired old eyes. Where should I look? I was thinking of going to the local Pick A Part and seeing if I could snag a "new looking" good one. Maybe get 4 or 5 and keep them on hand. At least I now know how to get the fuel pump to run using a jumper on the red & red/yellow wires. Just got a brand new Bosch starter (sticker still on it) for $8.50 + tax at the Pick A part yard. I think people spend a bunch of bucks on their cars and when it still does not run...they junk them, good new parts and all. Thanks again for the good info. Alynn

You are doing the right by going to a Pick a Part. and by keeping a few on hand. There is a photo posted re: solder locations, I picked up a almost new Brake boster=10.00...Good Luck
