91 740-940 Wagon Differences? 900

I own an 88 740 Turbo wagon and will looking at a 91 940 Turbo Wagon tonight. I'm wondering what are some of the differences between them because I thought they still made the 740 in 91 and I assumed it was the 760-960s that were upscale(more complicated).I'll appreciate any thoughts on what separates this 91 940 from my 88 740. Thanks.

Between a '91 745T and '91 945T (not SE) the differences that I know of are: leather seat stitching/leather thickness, headlights ('88-'90 760 front end on the 940), 16" Hydras (same as '90 740T), 6 speakers vs. 4. Other then that, I'm not sure. They're hardly different at all. The most noticeable difference is the headlights and rims. I have Hydras on my '91 745T, so that's one less difference. As for the differences between the 940 and your '88 740, there's quite a few: Rims, front end, hood, dash/guages/controls, seats, engine management (LH 2.4 vs. LH 2.2), improvements to the engine internals (connecting rods), turbo, headliner, and a few other little things. In '93 they added piston oil cooling to the engine ("L block") and in doing so eliminated piston slap.

My '91 came with 6 speakers (factory parts, each door plus 2 in dash), so who knows, really. They did cheapen it down to 4 speakers in '92, however.

The stock rims on a '91 turbo are the Draco's, with Hydra's being optional.

The turbo was mixed this year, with some getting equipped with the Garrett T25. Mine's has such, while many others I've seen got the more common Mitsubishi.

One powertrain difference ... you could still get the a manual tranny on the 7-series. :)

Hi Kane,

Wish my '91 745T had an M46! Very rare. I've come close to converting before, but haven't done it yet (other things to spend the money on)........ :) I'd like it to be M46 with Turbo +. Hehehe :)

Wow, nice detailed response. I take it 940s are on 16" rims? I didn't look. I assume these wagons are still solid rear axels. I should have looked. Didn't wagons come with multi-link at some point? Is LH 2.4 the designation for the electronic unit? Well it seems there where quite a few internal changes. I might just have to call her back and see if it is still available. Thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I'm glad I could help. I'm not positive if the '91 940Ts had 16" rims now. Apparently that was only in Canada. It still might have 16"s though, take a look. Yep, they're solid rear axles. All of the RWD wagons were until '95 (960) and all RWD 4cyl wagons had solid axles. '95+ 965s had Multilink II rear suspension. Yep, LH 2.4 is for the whole fuel injection system as I understand it. Yes there were quite a few upgrades. Your '88 is a fine car, but the '91 should be that much nicer. If you don't go for this '91, look for a '93+ 945T as that's a car you'd want to really take care of and drive for a very long time. Some of the best Volvos ever built. Let us know if you need more help :)

940's are on 'solid' axels...some debate but most turbo's seem to have locking diffs...

940t 91 standard wheels are draco's (15")

the 15" is actually a good thing omho as it equates to cheaper tyres!

Wierd, in Canada in '91 the 940T came with Hydras. I know for sure because I have a Canadian '91 brochure. '91 740Ts had Dracos and 940Ts had Hydras. Must have been different in the States. Also, in Canada '91 740Ts had no speakers in the front doors, only in the dash. I have a blown dash speaker in mine and a new one is like $130+ CAD from Volvo! Geez! I'll just buy two new aftermarket speakers and relocate to the door I guess. I'd like to keep it stock, but $130 is CRAZY for one speaker, especially one that small. Too bad they can't be had aftermarket (built into grill) and used ones are hard to find and even harder in good condition. Agh. Oh well, can't have it all :) At least the ones that will go in the door will be bigger and more powerful :)

There are engine control and sheet metal differences, but not much else: in most respects the cars are very similar.
