a/c ques. ? 200

I just converted my 84 244 to r134. Replaced shot compressor(used poe oil) flushed system replaced all o-rings, drier, and expansion valve, pulled vacuum until free of moisture, then charged w/ 36oz's of r134. This is what I'm curious about. My manifold guages read between 130 and 145 highside and between 10 and 25 lowside. I have'nt coated my expansion valve yet was wondering what to use and was also wondering if the wire w/ the coil on the end needed to be in a special place, I just stuck it in the opening the other came from. I covered it w/ my hand and the psi seemed to go up and the air got a little colder. any input is appreciated.

The tube you refer to is a temprature sensor tube that is inserted in a hollow of the line to sense the temp and let the expansion valve cycle properly. It should be inserted all the way in. Years ago we used to "cheat" and pull it out a little at a time to make it get a false reading so it would cool more but be careful as if you get it too cold at the evaporator (the inside part) it can ice up and block the air flow across, thus no cooling and lots of moisture when it melts. The old ones on American cars had a type of tar/cork stuff that came in small sheets or on a roll and the expansion valve was wrapped, probably more to protect it from corrosion more than anything else.
Good luck,
Dennis
