ENGINE QUESTIONS 900 1993

Brought car with 238k miles, 940 wagon, non-turbo. Replaced headgasket that was leaking that I thought was the cause of my overheating in heavy traffic. problem went away for months, now it's still overheating without the A/C being on. A/C stopped working a few ago. Is it normal for overheating at idle? Should I consider a engine rebuild? Help anyone.

    ENGINE QUESTIONS 900 1993

I second sped's advice. Overheating at idle in traffic is an air flow problem. Usual cause on your model...clogged radiator, or front fan not coming on. If you have the original radiator, and/or if you live where there is much lime in the water, the radiator will calcify and clog (I've found many individuals don't use a distilled water/coolant mixture). Further, the front of the radiator can get blocked with every bug, and every debris known to man as you zip down the road. Make certain your engine cooling fan works on BOTH speeds properly. Sitting in traffic, with the AC on, the fan should be on the higher speed.

A headgasket can be diagnosed rather easily. You either have water in the oil, or compression in the cooling system. If you take the exp tank cap off, and then start the car, do you have bubbles in the tank? Do you have what looks like chocolate milk on the dipstick? After a long drive, does your expansion tank look swollen? Does your car run rough or skip, particularly at first start? If you answered "no" to these questions, a headgasket is as unlikely as my children NOT asking me for money.

    Hope this helps.

    Chris

I removed the expansion cap on started up several times to verify no bubbles in tank. The radiator was replaced 2 yrs ago. I sprayed the radiator a few weeks ago to clean out bugs. I will check oil dipstick next. What can cause coolant pressure to rise in temp. There are no leaks of coolant from the head after gasket replacement. A/C compressor is not working at all, check fan, it works when I place screwdriver across leads. Engine idles at 750rpm, no hesitation or surging.

Just because you can get the fan to turn on, doesn't mean that your fan is turning on like it should, though you have ruled out the possibility of a locked up fan. You need to see if you are getting power to the cooling fan relay, you have two pressostats on the condensor that control fan function, and one that will turn off the compressor if the pressures get too high. If you are getting power to the relay, but the fan doesn't come on, then the problem is the relay. If you don't have signal to the relay, the problem is one or both of the pressostats.

Why does your AC not work? Low freon? No power to the low side switch? I guess we'll help you figure that out once this problem is eradicated.

        Chris

It seems you may have a radiator problem as well. Check for pressure in the cooling system right after start-up. Could be that you might have blown another head gasket. Did you have the head machined to make it flat before you did the head gasket? How about a valve job and new valve seals, was any of that done? Is the electric fan working?

Had head checked for warpage, check fine. Radiator is 2 yrs old, a/c comressor is not working at all, fan is good when I placed screwdriver across sensor leads.
