Few more questions on 960... 900

Hi All, I'm still doing some R&R on my newly purchased 965, and have a few more questions...

I found that my coil connectors were disintegrating, and may be the cause of a startup problem. My battery and alternator are both good, but the engine has to turn over quite a few moments before it would start. I noticed that the problem gets worse after a drive, so I assumed that the coil connector insulation is disintegrating from the heat, and is probably very close to giving up the ghost. Is this a good assumption? I guess I'll find out when the new connectors come in, but in the meantime, I've got myself in a little pickle...

When removing the #1 spark plug, I accidentally knocked a small piece of the rubber insulation into the cylinder... DOH!!! So question is, how do I get it out? or do I even need to get it out?? I was thinking of pulling the injector connector on that cylinder, leave the spark plug out, and crank the engine and letting the piston just eject that stuff through the spark plug hole... is that a good idea to try?? could I be hurting more than helping??

Another thing... at the firewall end of the engine, right by the cam angle sensor, I found a red/white wire with a female bullet connector that isn't hooked up to anything. From the wiring diagram, I see that I'm supposed to have two ground wires on the backside of the head. One of them is grounded and I can see it, is this red/white wire the other ground??? It comes out of the same loom as the ignition coil wires, and I can't seem to trace it to anything.

Final question is concerning tie-rod ends and ball joints. I have new parts that I'd like to install, but I found that my picklefork is too wide for the tie-rod ball joint. So I went to the FAQ, and nowhere do I find mention of a picklefork. Instead, it advises me to slam the end of the ball joint stud with a sledgehammer to knock it out... does anyone have suggestions? Should I just go find a picklefork that will fit this ball joint, or could I just whack it until it pops out?

Thanks!!

I don't have any improvements to contribute to the advice already given but another idea for the slow start when warm could be the bad fuel check valve or a leaking injector. Do you have a fuel pressure tester so you can check the leak down rate of the pressure when you shut down? I think a leaking injector is the most likely suspect as it would create a very rich condition in the manifold. Do you smell raw gas at the exhaust after one of these slow starts?

Acording to the fault tracing manual, it is a test socket to cylynder 1. Volt meter should read battery voltage.

    Norml,

    1) How hard is it to start? Both our 960/S90 crank for 6 revolutions EVERYTIME before it catches. I (and the dealer) consider this normal. Yes those wires to the coils do get brittle but you only have to mess with them once every 30k to change the plugs.

    2) Can you rig up a nozzel for the end of a good strong vacuum cleaner and insert it into the spark plug hole? That should do the trick.

    3) Unnattached wire? I can't help you there.

    4) There are two different sized pickle forks, the one for ball joints is larger than the pickle fork for tie rod ends.

On a fresh start after sitting overnight or something, it'll take maybe 6 revs to start... however, my concern was that after I drive it for a while, and try to restart it, it will progressively take more and more revs before the engine will catch.

I will try the vacuum cleaner... maybe get a section of hose to attach to it and stick inside the cylinder. hopefully, that'll get the gunk out.

I will go pick up a smaller picklefork. Even though I'm replacing the old ball joints, it just doesn't feel right to bang on the stud with a sledge...

      Thanks!
