What the heck are valve absorbers? 200

Just noticed a previous post and someone mentioned "valve absorbers." What in the heck are they, and when they are bad, what do they sound like. Finally, what is the proceedure to repair or replace them. Thanks.

A new one is shown alongside an old one in this picture.

A new one is show installed in the picture below.

The elasticity of the rubber takes some of the "click" out of the valve actuation.

Little rubber cushions that go between the valve cup follower and the upper valve spring retainer. They soften the clicking sound of the tappets. To replace them you have to remove the cam ( timing belt etc.) and the cup followers.

Isn't that cute! Are they necessary for oil control or just to keep things quieter?

      Mike!

The intent of the Valve Absorbers is to keep things quieter. Valve guide seals (only on the intake valves) keep oil consumption down.
