Timing Belt Tensioner?? 900

Hi All, I have a 93' 940 4cyl. Non Turbo.(145.000) I'm getting a weird "Squalk" noise when i start the car . For those of you bird hunters out there.... it sounds like a pheasant squalking. This noise only seems to be there for just a second or two when started after sitting for awhile. I pulled off all the drive belts, and it still does it. Water pump was replaced 5,ooo mi ago when timing belt was replaced. Could this noise be a timing belt tensioner?? Thanks in advance for any and all replies. Dan

Make sure that your tranny does not have too much fluid in it. I was getting a weird noise at start also, and draining down the fluid seems to have helped.

I'll put money on the CRANK PULLEY. I just did the whole thing about 3 months
ago. If the timing belt tensioner was never done I do suggest it next belt
service. The simple test is get some white out and "paint" a stripe from
center crank pulley (harmonic balancer) out to outer pulley area, after a
few days recheck and I'll bet the lines no longer line up !!! I did not
suspect t-belt tensioner as its fairly new. I did get A NEW water pump in my
"diagnostic" process. at 156,000 it really did'nt hurt. Of course the final
fix was the crank pulley, FCP groton sells them reasonable.

    Timing Belt Tensioner?? 900 1994

Replaced timing belt and tensioner in April. Amazing how much more quiet the engine runs. The old tensioner did have quite a bit of play.
